Taabu Munyoki

Nairobi, Kenya

"My interest in art sparked when I did art in high school, and I have since participated in, and won, various competitions, such as the Manjano and MASK Awards in Kenya. In 2017 I worked at a studio of Nairobi's Kuona Trust under the mentorship of Kevin Oduor.

I took part in a group exhibition titled ‘Early 21st Century Young African Artists’, curated by MASK Create, at the Saatchi Gallery in London, 2018. In 2019 I became an art resident at the Nafasi Art Residency program in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Currently, I am working from a studio space at Kobo Trust, Nairobi, under mentor David Thuku."

Artist statement

"Art for me is an expression of people, how they interact with each other and their environment, and how I interact with them, having been brought up in a Christian family in an urban part of Nairobi. I explore different media – paints, inks, pastels, resin, sculpting and digital art, and bold colours. I create works that evoke emotion and express the dynamics between people, of the self, and of the environment."
